stacking evidence
your brain stores information tied to your identity, use it to your benefit
hi friend,
“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity." - James Clear
A few years ago, I thought confidence was something you either had or you didn't.
I thought confident people were simply wired differently.
They walked into rooms differently.
They spoke differently.
They took bigger risks.
And I kept waiting for confidence to arrive.
It never did.
What I eventually realised was that confidence isn't something you find, it's something you earn.
Not from achievements or from external validation, but from evidence.
Your brain is constantly collecting proof about who you are. Think of it as a pattern recognition machine.
Every day, it's paying attention and keeping score:
Did you keep your word to yourself?
Did you do the thing you said you were going to do?
Did you take action despite feeling uncomfortable?
Or did you find a reason to put it off until tomorrow?
None of these moments seem significant on their own.
But your brain is always tracking the input.
These are all evidence building activities:
When you wake up and go for the run you promised yourself you'd do.
When you sit down to work instead of scrolling.
When you speak up in the meeting even though you're nervous.
When you have the difficult conversation you've been avoiding.
Most people think these actions are helping them achieve a goal when instead they're doing something even more important. They're shaping identity. That's why confidence isn't built by saying affirmations in the mirror. It's built when your brain has enough proof to say:
"I've seen this person do hard things before."
Think about the version of yourself you're trying to become.
Maybe it's someone more disciplined, focused, confident or consistent.
The gap between who you are today and who you want to become is often smaller than you think. What's usually missing isn't potential, but evidence.
Evidence that you can trust yourself, that you follow through, and that you are capable of becoming that person. And the beautiful thing is that you don't need a life-changing moment to create it.
You just need today's vote.
It could be…
One workout.
One difficult conversation.
One hour of focused work.
One promise kept.
Stack enough of those votes over time and something interesting happens.
You stop trying to convince yourself that you're capable. You know you are because you've seen the proof.
Ask yourself:
What evidence am I giving my brain every day?
Then choose one action today that your future self would be proud of.
One action and one piece of evidence.
That's how transformation begins.
